INI CET preparation for dental graduates (MDS)

INI CET, also written INI-CET or INICET, is the entrance examination conducted by AIIMS New Delhi for postgraduate seats at the Institutes of National Importance, including MDS seats. It is held twice a year for the January and July sessions, is computer based, and published preparation guides describe it as more focused on clinical application than NEET MDS.

How INI CET differs from NEET MDS

  • A different penalty. A wrong answer costs one third of a mark against a gain of one mark. Relative to the reward that is heavier than NEET MDS, where a wrong answer costs a quarter of a correct answer. On a single best answer question with four options, a blind guess breaks even at zero expected marks, so guess only when you can eliminate an option.
  • Clinical scenarios. Published guides describe longer clinical vignettes, image based questions, and some formats where more than one statement can be correct.
  • Blocks that lock. In the MD and MS paper each block is timed and cannot be reopened once it ends.

How to prepare for an INI CET style paper

  1. Learn in an integrated way. When you study periodontics, connect it to the systemic condition of the patient. When you study oral surgery, connect it to pharmacology and medicine.
  2. Practise scenarios, not one liners. Turn each fact into a question: what would this patient present with, what would you investigate, what would you do next.
  3. Build an image bank. OPGs, cephalometric tracings, histopathology slides, clinical photographs and radiographs are all fair game. Save every image you get wrong.
  4. Rehearse the block timing. Practise in timed blocks that match the structure in the current bulletin.

What carries over from NEET MDS

Core subject knowledge and revision discipline carry over. Many guides advise that NEET MDS preparation alone is not enough for INI CET because of the emphasis on application. Reuse your error log and your visual notes, and add scenario and image practice on top.

SketchRoot scenes are built so that one image carries the classification, features, investigations and management, which is the integrated recall INI CET asks for, and they build on the memory palace method. The founder, Dr. Jishnu Mohan, secured All India Rank 91 in INI CET 2022.

Frequently asked questions

Who conducts INI CET?

AIIMS New Delhi conducts INI CET for admission to postgraduate courses at AIIMS campuses, JIPMER, NIMHANS, PGIMER and SCTIMST.

How often is INI CET held?

Twice a year, for the January and July admission sessions.

What is the INI CET marking scheme?

One mark for each correct answer and one third of a mark deducted for each wrong answer.

Is INI CET harder than NEET MDS?

Many published guides describe INI CET as more demanding because it emphasises clinical application, images and multi correct formats, while NEET MDS covers a broader range of facts. Difficulty is subjective, so compare recent papers yourself.

Is NEET MDS preparation enough for INI CET?

Many guides advise that it is not, because INI CET rewards conceptual clarity and clinical reasoning. Reuse your NEET MDS base and add scenario and image practice.

Is INI CET the same as the AIIMS entrance?

For postgraduate seats, yes. AIIMS admits MD, MS and MDS candidates through INI CET rather than through a separate entrance. See our AIIMS page for the PhD route.
